Naira stability outlook improves as oil hits $115, reserves reach $55bn

Nigeria’s naira is entering November with a stronger cushion against depreciation, supported by higher crude oil earnings, improved domestic production and foreign exchange reserves of about $55 billion, according to a Nairametrics report.

Bonny Light, Nigeria’s premium crude grade, is trading at $115 per barrel, boosting export receipts and strengthening the Central Bank of Nigeria’s capacity to supply dollars when market pressures arise. The report linked the oil price rally to supply disruptions and heightened risks in the global energy market.

The gains come alongside a recovery in domestic oil production, which exceeded 1.53 million barrels per day, or roughly 1.7 million barrels when condensates are included. Improved security in the Niger Delta and reduced pipeline vandalism have helped lift output to its highest level in four years, the report said.

Stronger reserves support currency outlook

Nigeria’s gross foreign exchange reserves stood at approximately $55 billion, while net reserves reached a reported record of $46 billion. The larger buffer strengthens the CBN’s ability to meet foreign currency obligations and intervene in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market to moderate sharp currency movements.

The naira has recently traded between N1,330 and N1,370 to the dollar. The report put the official interbank rate at about N1,346/$, compared with N1,380/$–N1,390/$ in the parallel market, leaving a relatively contained gap between the two markets.

Tight monetary conditions are also supporting the currency. According to the report, the CBN’s open market operations are absorbing excess naira liquidity, while a policy rate of 23% is helping sustain the appeal of naira-denominated investments to foreign portfolio investors.

Increased domestic refining capacity, including operations at the Dangote refinery, is providing another source of support by reducing demand for foreign exchange to import refined petrol. The report described this as a structural change that could ease pressure on Nigeria’s dollar earnings.

Oil dependence remains a vulnerability

Despite the improved outlook, the currency remains exposed to a reversal in oil prices or fresh disruptions to domestic production. Recent output gains have largely reflected better pipeline uptime rather than the arrival of major new production capacity, leaving security and operational reliability important to sustaining export revenues.

Production also remains below the budget benchmark of two million barrels per day, a shortfall that continues to pose challenges for government revenue and deficit financing.

Stronger foreign portfolio inflows or additional dollar receipts from external borrowing could support further naira appreciation, with the report identifying N1,320/$ as a possible level to test. However, sustained stability will depend on continued oil production, favourable crude prices and policies that broaden foreign exchange earnings beyond petroleum.
