Residents of Kazaure Local Government Area in Jigawa State have embraced both traditional and modern food preservation methods to minimise waste, extend shelf life, and reduce household expenses.

Many households preserve surplus food through sun-drying, refrigeration, freezing, smoking, and proper storage, especially during periods of abundant harvest and fluctuating food prices.

Some residents said the practice had become necessary due to rising food costs and the need to avoid unnecessary losses.

Mrs. Sa’adatu Musa, a resident, said preserving food had become part of her household routine to ensure nothing went to waste.

She said vegetables, tomatoes, and pepper were often bought in large quantities when prices dropped and preserved for future use.

“When food is abundant and affordable, I buy more than we need immediately. I dry or refrigerate the excess so it lasts longer,” she said.

“This has helped my family reduce waste and save money because we no longer have to buy the same items repeatedly at higher prices.”

Mrs. Rukayya Rabi’u said she regularly sun-dries vegetables, okra, and spices to make them available throughout the year. She added that proper preservation also reduces frequent market visits.

“Food spoils quickly, especially during the rainy season, if it is not properly stored. Drying some food items allows us to use them whenever we need them without worrying about spoilage,” she said.

Mrs. Sahura Haladu said she had adopted freezing as an effective way of preserving cooked food and perishable items. According to her, the method has helped her household manage food more efficiently and reduce unnecessary spending.

“Sometimes we prepare more food than we can consume at once. Instead of throwing it away, we store it in the freezer and warm it whenever needed,” she said.

Mrs. Hadiza Sunusi said food preservation had become more important as households sought practical ways to maximise available resources. She added that careful storage of grains, legumes, and dried food items had helped prevent losses caused by insects and moisture.

“Many families have realised that preserving food is not only about reducing waste but also about ensuring food is available when needed. It also helps us cope with periods when food prices increase,” she said.

The residents urged relevant authorities and agricultural extension workers to intensify public awareness on safe and hygienic food preservation techniques. They said this would help households preserve food effectively, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve food security in the community.

They expressed optimism that wider adoption of food preservation practices would reduce food waste, lower household expenditure, and promote sustainable food consumption in Kazaure.
