As the world marks the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026, Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for collective action to prevent drug abuse and protect lives nationwide.
In a message issued in Abuja on Friday, Mrs. Tinubu underscored the importance of preventive measures, describing them as critical to safeguarding individuals, families, and communities.
She urged governments, community leaders, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders to intensify efforts to curb the menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
The 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is themed: “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention. Break the cycle. #StopOrganisedCrime.”
According to the First Lady, the theme highlights the need for collective responsibility and sustained commitment to prevention as a key strategy for addressing substance abuse and organised crime.
“It reminds us that prevention through education, awareness, family support, and community engagement remains one of the most effective tools in addressing substance abuse and criminal networks.
“I call on governments, families, schools, faith-based organisations, and civil society to strengthen their collective commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and supportive environments where every child and young person can thrive.
“Let us create an environment where every child will realise their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society through sustained advocacy, care, and support systems,” Mrs. Tinubu said.
