The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has confirmed the release of its abducted member, Dr Edwin Emegakor, in Anambra State.
Dr Princeton Okam, Chairman of the NMA Anambra State branch, confirmed the doctor’s freedom while speaking to journalists in Awka on Sunday.
Okam said Dr Emegakor regained his freedom after spending several days in captivity following his abduction on May 7.
Emegakor is the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital, Nkpor.
He was abducted in the evening after attending to a patient at the hospital by unidentified men dressed in security agency uniforms.
Okam expressed gratitude to God for the doctor’s safe return and commended the police for their role in securing his release.
“Our colleague has been rescued safely and reunited with his family. He is healthy, in high spirits, and responding well after the traumatic experience,” Okam said.
He noted that the doctor’s release has led to a review of the association’s planned industrial action, which was scheduled to begin on Monday.
“There will be an Emergency General Meeting to decide on the suspension of the planned action,” he added.
Okam thanked all those who supported the association and contributed to the rescue efforts. He also urged the Anambra State Government to strengthen security and protect lives and property across the state.
The NMA had earlier given the abductors 48 hours to release Dr Emegakor unconditionally, threatening to withdraw medical services statewide if he was not freed.
