MultiChoice shifts showmax originals to DStv stream ahead of platform shutdown

Showmax Originals are set to transition to a new home on DStv Stream, as part of a strategic move by MultiChoice to consolidate its streaming offerings.

The shift will see Showmax Originals and selected titles integrated into a dedicated Showmax section within the DStv Stream app, ensuring continued access to popular African content ahead of the planned closure of Showmax on 30 April 2026.

The integration brings together on-demand entertainment and live television, including sports, into a single streaming destination. Subscribers on DStv Compact and DStv Premium packages—both satellite and streaming-only customers—will be able to access Showmax Originals directly through DStv Stream, with additional movies and series expected to be added in the coming weeks.

According to MultiChoice, the move ensures that the award-winning African stories that defined Showmax will remain widely available rather than disappearing. A dedicated Showmax hub within DStv Stream will feature a curated selection of the platform’s most acclaimed originals and fan favourites, alongside the broader DStv streaming experience.

Speaking on the transition, Nomsa Philiso, Director of Content for General Entertainment, highlighted the impact of Showmax in advancing African storytelling. She noted that productions such as The Wife, Youngins, Devilsdorp, and Adulting, as well as content from across Nigeria, Kenya, and other African markets, were made possible through collaborations between MultiChoice and local creators, a commitment that will continue under the new structure.

The success of Showmax Originals has also been driven by international partnerships, including co-productions like Spinners, developed in collaboration with CANAL+, which have helped African stories reach global audiences. With the migration to DStv Stream, this content will now sit alongside a wider library of local and international programming, live TV channels, and sports content.

Willington Ngwepe said the move reflects evolving viewer preferences, combining on-demand content, live television, and streaming convenience into a single platform. He emphasized that the integration is designed to offer audiences a more seamless and comprehensive entertainment experience.

The Showmax section on DStv Stream will feature a mix of standout African titles and international content, alongside popular local shows, kids’ programming, and premium global series. The platform will also continue to offer extensive sports coverage through SuperSport, including major competitions such as the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, LaLiga, and South Africa’s Betway Premiership.

For users, the transition offers expanded viewing flexibility, with DStv Stream supporting smart TVs and mobile devices—an upgrade from the previous Showmax Premier League offering, which was limited to mobile viewing. Customers can access the content by downloading the DStv Stream app or visiting the DStv website, where Showmax Originals will be available as part of DStv Compact and Premium subscriptions.

Beyond content, DStv Stream includes features such as live and on-demand viewing, pause and rewind, “Watch From Start,” offline downloads, and data management options, positioning it as a comprehensive streaming solution as MultiChoice reshapes its digital entertainment strategy.
