The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) in Sokoto State has commissioned a 10,000-capacity poultry cold room facility at the Live Bird Market in Sokoto.
The Live Bird Market serves as a central business hub for various types of poultry, where residents purchase birds for consumption and commercial purposes. The market also functions as a processing centre where poultry sellers store their products before distribution.
However, the absence of a cold storage facility had long posed serious challenges to traders. Poultry sellers revealed that due to inconsistent demand—especially during festive periods—a significant portion of processed poultry often went to waste daily.
In response to these challenges, L-PRES constructed a modern cold room facility to enhance the operations of poultry sellers and buyers. The facility is designed to store up to 10,000 processed birds daily, thereby reducing waste and improving profitability.
Speaking during the handover ceremony to the leadership of the Poultry Sellers Association, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development, Abubakar Mohammed Yabo, stated that the Sokoto State Government, through the L-PRES Project, remains committed to promoting poultry businesses across the state.
He emphasized that the construction of the cold room facility demonstrates the government’s dedication to strengthening the livestock sector and urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the facility.
Earlier, the State Project Coordinator, Sirajo Abubakar, explained that L-PRES continues to implement impactful initiatives aimed at promoting livestock development in Sokoto State.
He noted that the Live Bird Market required urgent intervention, adding that the cold room facility would significantly boost business activities.
