Dr Fatima Aliyu, National Programme Coordinator (NPC) of the IFAD-assisted Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP), has called for greater unity among Nigerians, saying the country’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than division.
Aliyu made the call on Tuesday after she was conferred with the chieftaincy title of “Nne na-edozi obodo” (Champion of Community Development) by the Amike Autonomous Community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
She urged Nigerians to be their brothers’ keepers, irrespective of their region or background.
“I feel highly honoured by this title and I promise to do more for the community, of which I am now a part.
“We are gratified that the community appreciates the positive impact of the IFAD–VCDP, which is why it also conferred a chieftaincy title on our State Programme Coordinator, Chief Sunday Ituma,” she said.
Aliyu disclosed that the programme is currently operating in eight local government areas of Ebonyi State, expressing satisfaction with its impact on beneficiaries.
She said the programme would continue to enhance food security and improve the incomes of smallholder farmers engaged in the rice and cassava value chains in a sustainable manner.
“My affinity with Ebonyi has grown tremendously. I was here just a fortnight ago for the distribution of farm inputs to beneficiary farmers for dry-season farming.
“The state governor, who was represented by his wife, expressed delight with our interventions, as did other dignitaries present at the event,” she added.
Speaking earlier, the State Programme Coordinator (SPC), Chief Sunday Ituma, said the community had benefited from rural infrastructure projects under the programme, including culverts, mini-bridges and market development initiatives.
“We are honored to host the NPC in Ebonyi for the second time within a fortnight. This is a rare privilege.
“Her presence will inspire us to do more towards achieving the objectives of the programme in the state,” Ituma said.
It was also reported that the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Mike Nwankwo, conferred chieftaincy titles on other distinguished individuals from the community, Ebonyi State and other parts of the country.
