The Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State has set a target to immunise about 268,000 children under five years old in December 2025.
The Local Government Immunisation Officer (LIO), Mr Ashiru Muazu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Dutse.
Muazu said the exercise had been successful so far and expressed confidence that the target would be achieved before the end of the exercise.
He acknowledged an earlier challenge of vaccine shortages in some areas but noted that the issue had been resolved with additional supplies.
Muazu added that the immunisation team was tracking caregivers who stopped routine visits at various stages to ensure their children were fully vaccinated.
He explained that the conclusion of the exercise would determine whether a mop-up round would be necessary to reach missed children.
According to him, about 180 teams were deployed to administer oral polio vaccines across the council, while another 183 teams were assigned to conduct house-to-house visits.
He said turnout at key fixed posts, such as Andaza, Kachi, and Kudai health centres, had been impressive.
Some women expressed satisfaction with the integrated approach, which combined the immunisation exercise with the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Week.
A pregnant woman, Uwani Bala, said she was screened for illnesses and received free medication, appealing to the government to sustain free healthcare services.
NAN also gathered that the December exercise in Dutse included visits to places of worship to ensure all eligible children were reached.
The statewide campaign, which began on Sunday, Dec. 7, is scheduled to conclude on Friday, Dec. 12, across all 27 local government areas.
