Benedict Odamah, Quality Health, Safety and Environment Manager at JMG Limited, has called on Nigerians to embrace household items made from recycled materials. He said this would help reduce the country’s growing waste problem and promote a cleaner environment.
The appeal was made in Lagos during an event organized by JMG to mark the 2025 World Clean-Up Day. The theme for this year was “Tackling Textile and Fashion Waste.”
Experts note that recycled waste can be turned into many useful products. These include building and road materials, paper goods like tissues and cartons, clothing and furniture such as fleece jackets and carpets, and even parts for vehicles and machines.
During the clean-up exercise, which saw JMG staff clear plastics and other waste around the Gbagada area, Odamah stressed that buying recycled products would support the recycling industry and reduce the amount of waste dumped in landfills.
He said, “Nigeria must start buying household items made from recycled materials. If people don’t patronize them, those in the recycling business will be discouraged. The government should also step up campaigns to raise awareness.”
Odamah pointed out that waste can even be used for road repairs instead of relying only on bitumen. He explained that with government and public support, the recycling industry could grow, create jobs, and keep waste from piling up in the environment.
Highlighting JMG’s sustainability efforts, Odamah said the company sorts its waste and recycles up to 90 percent of it. He added that JMG has also introduced solar power solutions to help reduce carbon emissions.
“Our operations are sustainable and designed not to harm the environment. Anything from our processes can be reused, resold, or recycled. In waste management, the simple rule is: take only what you need, so nothing is wasted,” he said.
JMG’s Group General Manager, Rabi Jammal, also emphasized that environmental sustainability is at the heart of the company’s activities and social responsibility projects.
She explained, “We strongly believe in sustainability, energy efficiency, and community involvement. As part of our ISO certification, we make sure all processes meet health, safety, and environmental standards. We have just introduced a hybrid solar system at our head office to reduce emissions and save energy.”
JMG’s Marketing Executive, Goke Atiba, added that the company is deeply committed to protecting the environment and creating awareness in the community.
A Gbagada resident, Kayode Adebayo, praised the initiative. He said, “Seeing JMG clean the environment where they work shows they truly care about us and our surroundings. It gives us hope that together we can make a real difference.”
