Environmental crusader Bisong joins APC to advance climate governance

Veteran journalist and environmental rights advocate, Etta Michael Bisong, has formally joined Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), as part of his push to tackle climate change through effective governance.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday, September 5, 2025, shortly after being received by party executives, Bisong—who currently serves as Director of Media and Publicity for the APC Climate Change Network (ACCN)—said his decision to join politics was driven by his understanding of the link between real development and political power.

He noted that climate change is no longer a distant threat but a lived reality for frontline communities across Nigeria, manifesting in flooding, extreme weather events, food insecurity, and the destruction of critical infrastructure.

“Even in the face of these challenges, opportunities lie ahead,” Bisong said. “Intentional climate governance offers Nigeria the chance to reinvent its development pathways, innovate, and build resilience for present and future generations. True climate action can only be achieved through effective governance.”

The journalist-turned-politician urged other environmentalists to join the political space, stressing that advocacy alone is not enough to secure a sustainable future for Nigeria, Africa, and the world. He also expressed gratitude to Citizen Greg Odogwu, ACCN’s national coordinator, and the APC Wuse Ward executive for their support and warm reception.

In his remarks, Odogwu—who has been a member of the APC since 2014—said he deliberately identifies as a “citizen” to encourage patriotism. He described Bisong’s entry into the party as a “huge plus,” noting that his 17 years of experience in media and climate activism would help the APC attract “green votes” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Also speaking, Ayuba Idi, chairman of Wuse Ward, commended Bisong’s choice, describing the APC as a platform for people committed to transforming Nigeria through good governance. He reminded members that the party’s constitution remains supreme and warned against anti-party activities.
