Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has promised to investigate reports of unremitted loan deductions from workers’ salaries, assuring affected civil servants that his administration will take decisive action to address the issue.
The governor pledged while responding to an appeal from the chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Sokoto State, Abdullahi Aliyu, who raised concerns over the plight of workers whose loan repayments were deducted from their wages but not transferred to the relevant banks.
According to the NLC, many workers have faced serious hardship and damage to their financial records due to the previous administration’s failure to remit the deductions, despite continuous salary-based repayments.
“Your Excellency, please come to the aid of these people. They have been at a crossroads for years,” Abdullahi pleaded. “We know you to be firm in defending people’s rights. Please apply your popular slogan, in kudi kudi, in aiki aiki, to recover the diverted funds.”
In his response, Governor Aliyu reiterated his administration’s commitment to justice and transparency, assuring that the issue would be thoroughly investigated and resolved in favour of the affected workers.
“This administration prioritizes human rights and will not condone any violations under any guise,” the governor stated. “We are committed to protecting the rights of the weak, the less privileged, and the downtrodden in our state.”
The governor also urged the people of Sokoto to continue supporting his administration and maintain their prayers for the state’s leadership, promising sustained delivery of democratic dividends.
The issue of unremitted loan deductions has been a recurring concern among civil servants in the state, with many calling for accountability and redress from the government.
