The Sokoto State Government has embarked on the development of a comprehensive Climate Change Policy Document to tackle environmental challenges and promote sustainable development across the state.

This initiative was highlighted during a two-day validation session organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Sokoto State Ministry of Environment.

Speaking at the event’s opening, Mustapha Alkali, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, emphasized the urgency and significance of addressing climate change.

“Today’s meeting is critical to the future of our society and environment. If you save your environment, you’re saving your life,” Alkali stated. He underscored the connection between environmental health and societal stability, adding, “If your environment is not conducive, nothing will be achieved. There won’t be governance, there won’t be peace, and there won’t be life.”

Alkali, representing the Commissioner of Environment, Nura Shehu Tangaza, officially opened the session, calling for a collaborative approach to effectively combat climate change and its impacts.

The validation session brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government representatives, civil society organizations, and environmental experts, to review and refine the draft policy document.

The proposed Climate Change Policy Document is designed to provide a strategic framework for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, outline measures to adapt to climate change impacts, promote sustainability and resilience, and guide decision-making with measurable targets and accountability mechanisms.

Once finalized, the policy will serve as a roadmap for creating long-term solutions to climate-related challenges, fostering a more resilient and sustainable Sokoto State.

The session represents a significant step in Sokoto’s commitment to addressing environmental issues. By involving key stakeholders in the policy development process, the state aims to ensure a well-rounded and actionable strategy that aligns with global climate goals while addressing local environmental realities.

This initiative demonstrates Sokoto State’s proactive stance in building a sustainable future, ensuring environmental protection, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
