The Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina El-Imam, says no new case of Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) has been recorded in the state.

El-Imam stated this on Tuesday in Ilorin during her presentation at the 4th Quarterly Ministerial press briefing organised by the Kwara Government.

Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), commonly known as elephantiasis, is a painful and disfiguring disease, caused by parasites.

According to her, the training of Lymphedema patients, their caregivers, and health workers on LF case management is in progress, but no new case of LF has been recorded in the state.

The commissioner also explained that treatment of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) was free for at-risk people, with ivermectin and albendazole for the control of Onchocerciasis/Lymphatic Filariasis.

Similarly, El-Imam said the state had successfully carried out sensitisation to all residents on hypertension and diabetes, which were the two major non-communicable diseases.

“Approximately 102,452 people were screened for hypertension and diabetes, while free refill drugs were provided to all individuals with known cases of these diseases.

“Healthcare workers in primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare facilities were re-trained on the diagnosis and management of hypertension, diabetes, Tuberculosis, Leprosy, and Buruli Ulcer Control Programme.

“Kwara State has recorded remarkable achievements in infrastructure across various local governments.

‘Various free health intervention was also carried out, including maternal and child health, breast cancer, mass deworming, and strengthening of epidemic preparedness across the state,” she said.
