ASHENEWS reports that armed protesters on Thursday besieged the streets of Sokoto State amidst the ongoing protest against hunger in Nigeria.

Our correspondent reports that the protesters, mostly young people, converged on Maiduguri Road, marching to and fro from the State Government House in Sokoto State.

While destroying infrastructure on the street and the governor’s banner, the demonstrators decried the country’s system of governance and insecurity, particularly in the state, stating, “We are fed up, we are fed up. We need justice.”

Some of the demonstrators who spoke to journalists said that they felt that they had no choice but to voice their grievances due to the severe hardships they were facing.

The spokesperson for the northern group, Coalition for Emancipation of Sokoto Youths, Abubakar Babangida, while speaking to journalists accused the Sokoto State governor, Ahmed Aliyu of attempting to deny youths their fundamental human rights to protest.

Babangida decried attempts by the state government to tamper with the freedom of expression by banning demonstrations in the state.

ASHENEWS observed that the Sokoto State government, to contain and stabilize the protest, has deployed security agencies, including the police, army, customs, and mobile police, throughout Sokoto.

The 10-day protest aims to express the people’s discontent with the hardships faced under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
