The Sokoto State Government has announced that Monday, July 8, 2024, equivalent to the 2nd of Al Muharram 1446 AH, will be a public holiday to celebrate the new Islamic year 1446 AH.
In a statement signed by the Press Secretary to the Sokoto State Governor, Abubakar Bawa, and issued to newsmen on Saturday, Governor Ahmed Aliyu emphasized the importance of this occasion for the Muslim community.
Governor Aliyu called on the Muslim Ummah to renew their dedication to the worship of Almighty Allah and to abstain from evil deeds and unapproved innovations in Islam.
He urged the community to use the new Islamic calendar as an opportunity for sober reflection and self-assessment, identifying and correcting past mistakes.
The Governor extended his best wishes to the Muslim Ummah for a prosperous 1446 AH Islamic year.
Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, signifying a time of renewal and spiritual contemplation.
The word Muharram means ‘not permitted’ or ‘forbidden’ hence, Muslims are prohibited from taking part in activities like warfare and use it as a period of prayer and reflection.
Sokoto State is one of the 36 states of Nigeria, located in the extreme northwest of the country.
Bounded by Republic of the Niger to the north and west for 363 km, and the states of Zamfara to the east, and Kebbi to the south and west, partly across the Ka River. Its capital and largest city is the city of Sokoto.
