The world of education is rapidly evolving, with technology playing an increasingly pivotal role in shaping the learning process.  This transformation is particularly evident in Nigeria, where the Federal College of Education Jama’are (FCE Jama’are) recently hosted a vital capacity-building program for 50 teacher educators. Organized by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the event aimed to equip these educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively utilize Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for teaching and learning.

By Abdul-Azeez Suleiman

The capacity-building program at FCE Jama’are represents an important step towards bridging the digital divide in Nigeria’s educational system. Recognizing the importance of integrating ICT into classrooms, the NCCE and UBEC have prioritised empowering educators with the digital literacy skills needed to navigate the 21st-century learning environment.  As the Executive Secretary of NCCE emphasised, the event marked a significant milestone in the collective effort to strengthen teacher education, particularly in digital literacy and instructional technology.

The workshop focused on equipping participants with the skills to utilize e-learning platforms effectively. These platforms provide valuable tools for delivering interactive lessons, accessing educational resources, and facilitating collaborative learning experiences. The program’s emphasis on online and blended learning models aligns with the changing needs of education, particularly in a post-pandemic world where remote learning has become increasingly prevalent. This shift towards digital learning methodologies offers opportunities for personalized learning, increased accessibility, and enhanced student engagement.

The program’s success can be attributed to the strong collaboration between the NCCE, UBEC, and FCE Jama’are. This collaboration demonstrates a shared commitment to empowering educators and creating a more inclusive and equitable educational system.  The event received support from key stakeholders, including the Honorable Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, highlighting the government’s commitment to investing in the future of education.

The capacity-building program at FCE Jama’are serves as a vital catalyst for change in the Nigerian education landscape. By equipping teachers with the skills to effectively utilize ICT in their classrooms, the program empowers them to embrace innovative teaching methodologies and enhance the overall learning experience for students. This initiative signifies a commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that Nigerian students have access to quality education in an increasingly technological world.

The program’s impact extends beyond the 50 participating educators. It serves as a model for similar initiatives across the country, inspiring other institutions to prioritize the development of digital literacy skills among their faculty. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and embracing new technologies, the program contributes to a more dynamic and engaging learning environment for students of all ages.

The capacity building program held at FCE Jama’are represents a critical step towards enhancing the quality of teacher education in Nigeria. It reflects a proactive approach to integrating technology into the classroom, empowering educators to become effective digital learning facilitators and contribute to a more inclusive and engaging learning environment. By investing in the professional development of teachers and equipping them with the necessary skills to leverage ICT effectively, the NCCE, UBEC, and FCE Jama’are are paving the way for a brighter future of education in Nigeria.
