President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointments of at least 555 persons to serve as Pro-chancellors/Chairmen and members of Governing Councils of 111 federal universities, polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

This followed Tinubu’s assent to a list of nominees selected by the Ministry of Education.

An advertorial signed by Education Ministry Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack showed the appointment of a chairperson and four members for each of the institutions.

“The inauguration and retreat for the Governing Councils will take place on Thursday, May 30 and Friday, May 31, 2024, at the National Universities Commission, 26 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja. Both events will commence at 9:00am daily,” said Walson-Jack.

The appointments come days after the Academic Staff Union of Universities had threatened to embark on another strike, potentially disrupting the academic calendar and causing further setbacks in the country’s higher education sector.

Some of the appointees and the institutions are listed below :

Tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria are institutions offering higher and advanced forms of education in the nation’s universities, colleges of education, polytechnics and mono-technic.

Their functions includes approving the university’s annual budget, supervising staff recruiting and promotion, approving new academic programs, and ensuring that the university functions in accordance with its goals and objectives. The nomination of the Vice-Chancellor is one of the Council’s most important tasks.

Ogun is leading the pack as the state with the highest number of higher institutions in Nigeria with 20 universities, with Yobe coming last with just two. Nigeria currently has 262 universities.

Out of these numbers, 147 are privately owned, 63 are state owned, while 52 belong to the federal government.
