The Northwest University Sokoto (NWUS) has begun a transformative digital skills training programme designed to empower all its staff with the tools they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
The programme, which kicked off on Monday, December 1, 2025, is unfolding in three phases. It begins with a six-day intensive session for management staff — Deans, Directors, and Heads of Departments — who play a central role in shaping the University’s direction and culture.
At the opening ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Umar Bunza, spoke with a mix of conviction and concern about the pace of global technological change. He described ICT as “the new backbone of learning and institutional growth,” stressing that no institution — or individual — can afford to be left behind.
“At this computer age, whoever is left behind is left out. This University will not allow its staff to be left behind. We owe it to ourselves, to our students, and to the future we are building.”
Prof. Bunza also paid heartfelt tribute to the Pro-Chancellor and founder of the University, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, whom he described as a leader with a clear vision for the digital future.
“As an advocate of ICT, Senator Wamakko has remained unwavering in his commitment to making Northwest University Sokoto a model of digital innovation,” he said. “His support for this training reflects his belief that every member of staff deserves the opportunity to grow and compete globally.”
He encouraged participants to embrace the training not just as a requirement, but as a personal investment in their own growth. Prof. Bunza assured that the initiative would be sustained, noting that continuous learning is at the heart of the university’s mission.
