MTN Ghana has expressed strong support for a government-led SIM re-registration exercise that will be rolled out in phases as part of efforts to strengthen national security and safeguard mobile subscribers.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, aims to link SIM cards to the National Identification Authority database to reduce fraud, identity theft, and other cyber-related risks.
The telecom operator is working in close coordination with regulators to ensure the process is implemented smoothly and efficiently. The company says the approach will prioritise careful planning and the use of digital tools to avoid disruptions and make participation more convenient for users.
MTN Ghana’s Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Blewett, noted that the re-registration exercise is a collective industry effort driven by the government’s goal of improving security and accountability within the telecom sector. He explained that the rollout will not be carried out in a single day but will instead follow a structured schedule supported by digital appointment systems to manage participation effectively.
He also pointed out that biometric verification, including fingerprint and facial recognition, will play a key role in ensuring that SIM cards are accurately linked to their rightful owners, helping to prevent misuse by unauthorized individuals.
On the financial aspect, MTN Ghana indicated that it will manage the exercise within its existing budget framework, making necessary adjustments internally to support the nationwide rollout.
Overall, the company remains committed to supporting the initiative while focusing on efficiency, security, and a seamless experience for subscribers as the country advances its digital identity and security agenda.
