Makinde appoints acting board for Oyo electricity commission

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the appointment of acting board members for the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OYSERC).

This is contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dr Suleimon Olanrewaju, and made available to newsmen on Friday in Ibadan.

According to the statement, the board, which will facilitate the oversight functions of the commission, will be chaired by the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Prof. Dahud Sangodoyin.

The governor also appointed Mr Taiwo Ayanniyi as secretary, while Mr Solomon Oyekunle and Mr Abiodun Adedoja will serve as technical and strategic members, respectively.

The statement further indicated that Mrs Omolara Omoremi will serve as legal adviser to the board.

It quoted Makinde as saying that the appointments are in an acting capacity and are aimed at accelerating the opening of the state’s electricity market.

The move is also intended to drive the institutional take-off of the commission and establish foundational regulatory systems and licensing frameworks.

According to the statement, the commission will also ensure compliance mechanisms, tariff oversight methodologies, consumer protection architecture and internal governance structures.

“The appointments are equally significant in the operationalize of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission and mark a major step in the implementation of the Electricity Act 2023 and the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission Law 2024.

“The Oyo State Electricity Law 2024 empowers the state to regulate its intra-state electricity market under Nigeria’s evolving dual-tier regulatory framework.

“With the decentralization of electricity regulatory oversight, Oyo State is now positioned to respond more quickly to electricity service gaps, strengthen the accountability of operators and encourage private sector investment in local power solutions,” Makinde said.
