A software engineer, Mr. Mosès Daniel, has called on Nigerians to activate the security features embedded in their mobile phones and electronic devices to reduce theft risks and prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information.
Daniel, who is the Chief Executive Officer of MDX Computer Services, said that although many devices are equipped with inbuilt security options, most users in Nigeria either ignore or choose not to activate them—often out of ignorance or negligence.
He warned that phone theft was becoming increasingly common, and stressed the importance of vigilance in protecting both the devices and the data they carry.
“Whether your phone or device is stolen or misplaced, these security measures ensure that the information stored on them is not compromised,” Daniel said.
He explained that enabling anti-theft features could help track and recover missing phones and prevent criminals from resetting devices for resale.
According to Daniel, smartphones and other digital gadgets have become central to daily activities including communication, banking, and personal networking. As such, they should be properly protected.
“Phones make our lives easier, but they also contain sensitive data. This makes them prime targets for criminals,” he said. “Losing a phone can be stressful and may result in the loss of valuable and sometimes irreplaceable information.”
He recommended activating tracking features like the “Find My Device” app and enabling tools that detect suspicious activities or login attempts.
Daniel also advised phone manufacturers to simplify the activation of inbuilt security features to encourage wider adoption, especially among users who may not be tech-savvy.
“Regardless of the specific brand or operating system, every user should make it a priority to activate available security features,” he said.
