The Oyo State House of Assembly has canceled its planned third-anniversary celebrations due to security concerns, especially in the Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso areas.
Instead, the legislature reflected on its performance over the past three years as a crucial arm of government.
The 10th Assembly was inaugurated on June 14, 2023.
During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin explained that the decision was driven by recent security challenges and the need to show solidarity with affected areas and residents.
He noted that, ordinarily, the anniversary would have been marked with celebrations and public events. However, members chose to focus on governance, legislative work, and efforts to address security issues.
“Thirty-six bills have been enacted, covering various sectors of governance and development. We passed 276 resolutions, transmitted to the executive and other agencies for implementation, and are monitoring their progress through oversight activities,” he said.
Ogundoyin added that the Post-Legislative Scrutiny (PLS) Unit examined the implementation of the 2019 Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law and the 2020 Oyo State Security Agency Law.
The legislature also organized a security summit as a key intervention during this period.
“The summit was convened in response to ongoing security challenges affecting parts of the state,” he explained.
The Assembly held nine public hearings on various bills, providing stakeholders, civil society, and the public opportunities to contribute to the legislative process.
Ogundoyin reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to lawmaking, oversight, and effective representation.
“The Assembly remains focused on delivering democratic dividends and supporting policies that promote peace, security, and socio-economic development. Our activities are guided by accountability, transparency, and people-oriented governance. We will continue working with the executive and security agencies to address emerging challenges and improve citizens’ welfare,” he assured.
