APC opts for consensus at national convention

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it will adopt a consensus arrangement to elect its national leaders at the party’s convention scheduled for March 27 and 28, 2026, in Abuja.

The Assistant Secretary, Media and Publicity, of the APC National Convention 2026, Mary Ikoku, disclosed this on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.

Speaking on the mode of selecting candidates for elective positions, Ikoku said no definitive position had been taken, noting that political dynamics often vary across levels.

“For this convention, I can confirm the party is adopting consensus. As for elective positions, I cannot say, because politics is local,” she said.

She added that consensus may not be practicable in all cases, particularly for competitive elective offices.

Ikoku also addressed provisions of the Electoral Act guiding party primaries and membership registration, acknowledging implementation challenges but attributing opposition concerns to poor preparation.

“We have an electoral law that clearly defines the models for primaries. Direct primaries and consensus are allowed, while indirect primaries have been removed.

“That is the law as it stands. Any well-organised political party should not wait until election season to begin preparations,” she said.

According to her, failure to plan exposes parties to avoidable difficulties during the electoral cycle.

Ahead of the convention, the ruling party on Tuesday screened aspirants for positions in its National Working Committee (NWC), including national chairman hopeful Nentawe Yilwatda and national secretary aspirant Ajibola Basiru.

Also screened were several incumbent NWC members seeking re-election, including National Youth Leader Dayo Israel, Deputy National Chairman (North) Ali Bukar Dalori, National Legal Adviser Abdulkarim Abubakar Kana, National Woman Leader Mary Alile Idele, and National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, among others.

The convention is expected to reshape the party’s leadership ahead of future electoral cycles.
