Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State and leaders of the Accord Party have thrown their weight behind President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, citing political stability, continuity and the need to protect the interests of the state.
The decision was reached during a meeting between Adeleke and the national leadership of the Accord Party in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
The meeting, according to a statement by Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesman for Adeleke’s re-election campaign, also focused on the political situation in Osun ahead of the August 8, 2026, governorship election.
Adeleke reportedly explained that his support for Tinubu was informed by the need for Osun State to maintain a strong working relationship with the Federal Government.
The governor said such a relationship would help the state attract federal support and advance its development agenda, particularly in infrastructure, economic growth and other areas requiring collaboration with the Federal Government.
He also expressed confidence that the Tinubu administration would continue to support projects and programmes capable of improving the lives of residents of the state.
The Accord Party leadership backed the governor’s position, saying its decision to adopt Tinubu was based on what it described as the political realities and interests of the party and its members.
National Chairman of the party, Maxwell Mgbudem, said the leadership had carefully considered the situation before arriving at the decision.
Mgbudem said the party would work with Adeleke and other stakeholders to ensure that the new political alignment produces tangible benefits for its members and supporters.
The party leadership also called for unity among its members, urging them to respect the decision and remain committed to the party’s political direction.
The latest development marks a change from the position previously taken by the Accord Party.
In April, the party had dismissed reports that it had endorsed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election, saying its immediate priority at the time was to support Adeleke’s bid for a second term as governor of Osun State.
However, the latest position by the party’s leadership and Adeleke signals a new political alignment ahead of the 2027 general election.
The move comes at a time when political parties and prominent politicians are increasingly reviewing their alliances and repositioning themselves ahead of the next general election.
With the endorsement, Adeleke and the Accord Party leadership are expected to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election bid while simultaneously pursuing their political interests in Osun State and other parts of the country.
The development could further alter the political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential election, as parties and political actors continue to forge alliances and realign ahead of the polls.
