Adamu Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State.
In a resignation letter dated March 2, 2026, Adamu said his decision followed “deep personal reflection and careful consideration.”
“The Honourable Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, Adamawa State, Adamu Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned from his position after serving two successful terms in office,” the letter stated.
He expressed gratitude to Governor Umaru Fintiri for the opportunity to serve.
“I remain profoundly grateful for the confidence and trust Your Excellency reposed in me throughout my tenure. Your support provided the enabling environment to carry out the responsibilities of the office with dedication and commitment,” he wrote.
Adamu also thanked the people of Adamawa State for their support.
“I extend my sincere appreciation to the good people of Adamawa State for their understanding, prayers, and support during my time in service. Their encouragement has been a constant source of strength,” the letter added.
His resignation comes days after Governor Fintiri, 59, announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
Adamu did not state whether his decision was politically motivated. He was first nominated commissioner in October 2019 during Fintiri’s first term. The governor, elected on the platform of the PDP, is currently serving his second term.
Fintiri’s move to the APC adds to the growing wave of defections by governors and political heavyweights ahead of the 2027 general elections. Several commissioners and members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly have also reportedly followed him to the APC.
The development further reshapes the political landscape in Adamawa, a key North-East state.
Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar, an Adamawa indigene, is among the leading figures in the African Democratic Congress, reportedly positioning for Nigeria’s presidency in the next electoral cycle.
