The principal partner of the first female-owned law firm (Rahama Law Chambers) in Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states, and first female chairperson of the Sokoto branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Barrister Rashida Mohammed has revealed how she suffered stigma when she contested the position secretary in NBA.
Mohammed disclosed this in a recent exclusive interview with ASHENEWS HERE while sharing her inspiring journey from Kaiama in Kwara State to her historic election as the first Sokoto NBA chairperson.
According to her, “In 2022, I contested for the position of Secretary of the NBA Sokoto. It was a herculean task because I was the first female lawyer to dare come out for such a position, and I won overwhelmingly.
“My performance as the secretary earned me the support I have today. When I came to contest for the chairmanship of the branch, I didn’t expect fewer challenges than I had faced as a secretary. I prepared myself for rejection, resistance, stigma, blackmail, and character assassination,” she said.
Mohammed said that as a woman, she faced significant challenges in a patriarchal society, particularly when she first contested for the position of Secretary of the NBA Sokoto in 2022.
“Some people went the extra mile to stop me by using religion to instigate people against my candidacy. I was called names like “Kafira, (infidel)” “Shaitan,” “Anti-Islamic Agenda,” and “Divorcee,” she recalls.
Mohammed said that despite these labels and the stigma, her performance in the role earned her widespread support.
She further said that when she ran for chairperson, she was prepared for the hurdles of rejection, blackmail, and character assassination, but her determination and faith saw her through.
Her victory symbolizes a shift in mindset regarding women’s leadership within the NBA.
“I am not perfect, but I knew I was not doing anything wrong because I had consulted our elders and those well-versed in Islamic knowledge before making up my mind.
“I held onto God, praying every day and night, asking for guidance. I remained focused and courageous, believing that the only person who could tell me I couldn’t do it was me, and I didn’t have to listen to that,” Mohammed told ASHENEWS.
Mohammed’s primary goals for her tenure include promoting excellence, inclusivity, and the rule of law within the Sokoto branch. She aims to create a united Bar free from discrimination and to foster an environment where young lawyers and women can thrive.
Her plans involve developing innovative initiatives, programs, and activities to meet the diverse needs of NBA members.
She emphasizes mentorship and collaboration with NGOs and international partners to provide capacity building and support for young lawyers.
Barrister Mohammed’s achievement is a significant milestone for women in law, especially in Northern Nigeria. Her message to young girls and women is one of self-belief, hard work, and resilience. She encourages them to pursue their dreams despite societal limitations and to remain focused and disciplined.
Mohammed’s leadership is expected to enhance the NBA’s approach to gender equality and diversity. The NBA has made strides in promoting women in leadership, and her election as chairperson marks a significant step forward.
She aims to boost the confidence and self-esteem of female lawyers and ensure their active participation in the legal profession. Her administration will respect all stakeholders and work towards a more inclusive and equitable NBA.
Barrister Mohammed’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of breaking gender barriers.
Her leadership promises a brighter future for the Sokoto NBA and serves as an inspiration for aspiring female lawyers across Nigeria.
