South Korea’s National Election Commission (NEC) on Wednesday established a fact-finding committee to investigate an unprecedented ballot shortage reported during last week’s local elections.
The committee, composed of external experts, aims to determine the exact cause of the incident and develop preventive measures.
“We will uncover the full truth behind the incident through an objective and accurate investigation and transparently disclose the findings,” said Cho Hyun-wook, the committee chairperson.

Cho added that the committee will “strictly” hold those responsible accountable and pursue comprehensive measures to ensure the fairness and integrity of future elections.
She emphasized that committee members would examine the issue from an “objective and politically neutral” perspective, with a shared commitment to protecting constitutional values.
The committee, which will operate until June 19, consists of six members recommended by civic organizations, media, legal, and academic communities.
The inaugural meeting was held at the election watchdog’s headquarters in Gwacheon, just south of Seoul.
It is recalled that ballot shortages occurred at more than a dozen polling stations in Seoul, sparking public outrage.
