China and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations through sports development, cultural exchange, and people-to-people engagement.
The two countries made this pledge on Tuesday in Abuja during the event “The Passion of Chinese Wushu Cultural Heritage Chinese Wushu Premium Exhibition,” organized by the Chinese Embassy.
Mr. Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, stated that sports and culture are powerful tools for fostering mutual understanding and friendship among nations.
Yang, also the Director of the China Cultural Centre, emphasized that Chinese Wushu is more than a sport; it represents China’s cultural heritage, values, and philosophy.
“Cultural exchange acts as an important bridge for mutual learning among civilizations and brings people closer together.
“As a symbol of China’s traditional culture, Wushu is not just a sport; it is a cultural language and a spiritual heritage.
“It embodies the Chinese nation’s spirit of self-improvement and reflects values such as respect, virtue, harmony, and peaceful coexistence,” he explained.
Yang added that Wushu promotes peace, moral cultivation, and personal development.
“The true spirit of martial arts lies in both physical skills and moral growth.
“Whether it’s the balance and grace of Tai Chi or the vitality of traditional boxing styles, Chinese Wushu reflects the philosophical wisdom of harmony between humanity and nature,” he said.
He noted that the exhibition offered Nigerians a chance to gain deeper insights into Chinese culture.
The event also featured lectures, demonstrations, and interactive sessions led by a delegation from Beijing Sport University, headed by Prof. Wu Dong.
Yang stated that the Chinese Embassy and China Cultural Centre will continue promoting cooperation in language education, arts, tourism, youth exchanges, and sports collaboration.
Also speaking, Malam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), said sports diplomacy is an effective platform for strengthening bilateral ties.
Represented by Mr. Musa Ahmadu, Special Adviser on Legal Strategy and Administration, Dikko emphasized that sports transcend borders and foster understanding among nations.
“Sports speak a universal language. It crosses borders, bridges differences, and creates opportunities for deeper connections that formal diplomacy cannot always achieve.
“Through sports, young people learn discipline, nations build friendships, and cultures are appreciated and respected,” he said.
Ahmadu highlighted that the exhibition allowed Nigerians to experience an important aspect of Chinese culture and opened doors for future cooperation in sports, education, and cultural exchanges.
He commended the Chinese government for supporting Nigeria through capacity-building programs.
Dikko called for expanded collaboration in sports administration, coaching, sports science, infrastructure, and traditional sports.
“China has extensive experience, strong institutions, advanced sports systems, and a rich cultural heritage.
“There’s a natural opportunity for both countries to work together in these areas and forge stronger partnerships,” he stated.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s willingness to deepen engagement with Chinese institutions to promote sports development and strengthen people-to-people ties.
The exhibition featured Wushu demonstrations, cultural presentations, and interactive sessions by martial arts experts from Beijing Sport University.
It showcased the history, philosophy, and artistic heritage of Chinese martial arts.
