FG launches 2026–2030 national alcohol policy to tackle health, social risks

The Federal Government has launched Nigeria’s National Alcohol Policy and Multisectoral Implementation Plan for 2026–2030, introducing a coordinated framework aimed at promoting responsible alcohol production, distribution, marketing and consumption.

The policy, unveiled on Thursday, August 27, 2026, is designed to address the health, safety, social and economic consequences associated with harmful alcohol use while recognising the role of the alcohol industry in employment, agriculture, manufacturing and other areas of the economy.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare said the new framework is intended to provide a unified national approach to alcohol control and strengthen coordination among government institutions and other stakeholders.

The move comes amid intensified government action against the availability of small-volume alcoholic beverages. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been enforcing a ban on the production, importation, distribution and sale of alcoholic drinks packaged in sachets and PET bottles below 200 millilitres.

NAFDAC has said the enforcement is primarily aimed at reducing easy access to alcohol, particularly among children and adolescents, and curbing alcohol-related harm.

The agency has conducted raids on markets, motor parks, bars, retail outlets and manufacturing facilities, with offenders facing seizures, regulatory sanctions and possible prosecution.

The Federal Ministry of Health said the new policy seeks to strike a balance between economic interests and public health, with the overarching objective of building healthier populations, safer communities and a more responsible alcohol industry.

The policy also comes against the backdrop of legislative efforts in the National Assembly to establish a comprehensive legal framework for alcohol control. In May, the House of Representatives advanced a bill seeking to regulate the production, importation, distribution, advertising, marketing and consumption of alcoholic beverages, with particular safeguards for minors and other vulnerable groups.

The proposed legislation followed growing concerns about alcohol-related public health and social problems, including substance abuse, road safety risks and harm to young people.

With the launch of the 2026–2030 policy, the Federal Government is expected to intensify inter-agency collaboration, public awareness and regulatory measures aimed at reducing harmful alcohol consumption while ensuring that legitimate businesses within the sector operate responsibly.

The policy marks a broader shift towards a coordinated, preventive approach to alcohol-related harm rather than relying solely on enforcement after problems have occurred.
