Warri gets modern maternal, childcare centre under SDG project

The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has praised President Bola Tinubu for building a new 80-bed specialist hospital for mothers and children in the Ugbuwangue community, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The hospital was constructed by the Federal Government through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking during the hospital’s opening on Tuesday, the Olu of Warri said the facility would greatly improve healthcare for mothers and children.

The hospital was officially handed over to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, for management.

The monarch said the hospital would make a big difference in the Ugbuwangue community, stressing that good health is the foundation of true wealth.

He said, “This facility is highly valued and appreciated. Without health, there is no wealth. Wealth becomes meaningless when there is no good health.”

However, the Olu of Warri reminded the Federal Government that Delta people expect more projects in the state.

He also called on residents of Ugbuwangue to protect the hospital and ensure that access roads remain free, especially for emergency cases.

He said, “People must be able to reach this hospital at any time without obstacles. Wrong parking or blocked access should not be allowed.”

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, described the hospital as a major step toward improving healthcare in Warri and nearby communities.

He said the facility was not just a building but “a beacon of hope” and an important milestone in achieving health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Oborevwori added that investing in healthcare was an investment in Delta’s future, which would produce healthier and more prosperous citizens.

The governor assured that his government would provide proper management, resources, and personnel to make the hospital function effectively.

Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Isaac Agbateyiniro, also praised the project, saying it would help reduce high maternal and child death rates in the area.

He said the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu was now becoming a reality with the establishment of such projects.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, described the hospital as part of Nigeria’s journey toward achieving SDG Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being for all.

She explained that the facility was one of many built in partnership with state governments to reduce maternal and child mortality and provide equal access to quality healthcare.

She added that the hospital reflected President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which is built on inclusion, equity, and sustainable development.

The Acting Medical Director of FMC Asaba, Dr. Ekeneam Omo, said the hospital showed the government’s commitment to expanding healthcare and achieving universal health coverage.

He thanked Princess Orelope-Adefulire and the Olu of Warri for supporting the project.

Dr. Omo highlighted the hospital’s features, which include emergency, female, paediatric, neonatal and labour wards, an intensive care unit, a modern theatre, laboratory, consulting rooms, staff quarters, and alternative power supply.

He promised that every patient would be treated with dignity and care, while also requesting more land and equipment such as digital X-ray and CT scan machines to expand services.
