The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has inducted 54 nurses from the Department of Nursing Sciences, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS).
The Registrar of NMCN, Ndagi Alhassan, led the oath-taking and induction ceremony on Monday in Sokoto, congratulating the graduates and wishing them a successful career.
He stressed the importance of adhering to professional conduct, describing it as ethical guidelines binding on every nurse in Nigeria.
“As you embark on your nursing journey, remember that your profession is not just a career, but a call to make a difference in lives,” Alhassan said.
UDUS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bashir Garba, said the university had equipped graduates to tackle challenges in the nursing profession. He emphasized that nursing requires compassion, continuous learning, and professionalism.
“As future healthcare leaders, you carry the responsibility of caring for the vulnerable and the ailing. Uphold the values of compassion, empathy, and kindness,” Garba urged.
He added that the training had equipped graduates with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to excel in their careers.
Sokoto Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Abubakar-Wurno, said nurses play a critical role in achieving universal health coverage and strengthening the primary healthcare system.
“Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system, providing treatment, comfort, disease prevention, and community care,” he said.
One graduate, Maryam Bashir-Harisu, described the induction as a landmark achievement and the start of a lifelong career.
The event was attended by the President of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Haruna Mamman; UDUS College of Health Science Provost, Prof. Abdulgafar Jimoh; and Head of Nursing Sciences, Dr. Awwalu Muhammad, among others.
