Nursing mothers across Plateau State have commended the State Government and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for their intervention on Small Quantity Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplements (SQLNS) for children.
The mothers made the commendation on Wednesday during a tour of several Primary Healthcare Facilities in Jos North and South Local Government Areas.
The SQLNS initiative was introduced in September 2025 by the state government in collaboration with UNICEF and other donor agencies. Facilitated by the Child Nutrition Fund (CNF), the programme aims to curb child malnutrition in the state.
Hauwa Mohammed, one of the nursing mothers, said the initiative had mitigated some of the challenges her baby had faced. She appealed for the programme’s sustainability, adding that it had been effective so far.
Another mother, Rukkayat Shuaibu, noted that the initiative had helped address common issues associated with her baby’s teething period.
Hasiya Agwaru said her baby’s weight and overall health had improved since she began administering the supplements. She called on the state government and donor agencies to ensure a regular supply of the supplements to support the growth of children.
Mr. Abdullahi Rabiu, Ward Head of Nasarawa-Gwong in Jos North, also commended the state government and its partners for the initiative.
Speaking on the exercise, Mr. Silas Nansel, the Assistant Nutrition Officer in the state, said the tour was necessary to assess the efficacy of the supplements.
“The state government is passionate about eradicating malnutrition in Plateau. Government is fully committed, and we are here to evaluate the successes or challenges of the SQLNS initiative,” he said.
