In Niger State, a troubling outbreak has emerged, affecting the lives of many residents in communities such as Ekoko, Tutijinba, Banin Bida, Laruta, and Edogifu. The local health authorities confirmed that as of January 20, 2025, 24 individuals have been hospitalized due to a mysterious illness that has left them vulnerable and fearful.
The story begins with the index case reported on January 9, 2025—a focal person at the Laruta Primary Health Centre who experienced debilitating stomach cramps and headaches before collapsing.
This incident sent shockwaves through the community, prompting health officials to mobilize quickly.
The Commissioner of Primary Health, Dr. Ibrahim Dangana, said the Disease Surveillance Unit and the ministry had formed a State Rapid Response Team to investigate the situation further.
“When health workers visited Laruta and local medical facilities, they encountered patients exhibiting alarming symptoms: sudden weakness, altered consciousness, and occasional fever. The community’s anxiety grew as more cases were reported,” he said.

Among those affected, three patients were admitted to FMC Bida and Umaru Sanda Ndayako Hospital while four remained under observation at the Laruta health center. Thankfully, 20 individuals have since been discharged after receiving treatment.
“Initial blood tests suggested that the underlying causes might be linked to poorly treated malaria and typhoid fever. Health officials are working diligently to understand this outbreak better. They have engaged with community members to raise awareness about hygiene practices and nutrition—essential steps in curtailing the spread of this strange illness,” Commissioner Dangana further said.
Meanwhile, the emotional toll on residents is palpable. Families are left anxious as they watch their loved ones suffer from an illness that remains poorly understood.
