The growing problem of drug abuse among young people in Nigerian schools, communities, and sports has worried the head of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retired).
At a football event called “Kick Out Drug Abuse” (KODA), Marwa said that everyone needs to work together to fight drug abuse, which is harming the health and future of Nigeria’s youth.
The event was held at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja and was organized by a drug company called RichyGold International, in partnership with the NDLEA.
Boys’ and girls’ football teams from local schools and clubs in Abuja played in exciting matches during the event.
Marwa praised RichyGold for using football to bring about positive change in young people’s lives. He warned that drugs like tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, tramadol, codeine, cocaine, and meth are destroying the health and future of Nigerian youth.
He also warned that drug abuse can lead to broken homes, crime, and violence. He encouraged young people to use the same discipline they show in football to live drug-free lives.
Earlier, Jude Onwusonye, the head of RichyGold and the person behind KODA, said his company supports the government’s fight against drug abuse through this sports program.
He said drug abuse is now also affecting girls, who are future mothers and key members of society. He asked all young people to stay away from drugs because they can destroy their goals and trust in the community.
The event included motivational talks, a play about the dangers of drug use, football games, and ended with Marwa giving trophies, medals, and cash prizes to the best teams and schools.
Many important people attended the event, including former government officials, business leaders, youth corps members, and student leaders. Their presence showed strong support from different sectors to protect Nigerian youth from drug abuse.
