The Kwara Governor’s wife, Amb. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, says the state government will soon capture treatment of tuberculosis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) under its health insurance scheme.
AbdulRasaq said this in Ilorin during the Investiture of Local Government Chairlady and Spouses of Local Government Chairmen as Tuberculosis Champions.
AbdulRazaq observed that Tuberculosis remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria and around the world.
According to her, many people live with undiagnosed tuberculosis and may only get to know when severe complications set in.
Abdulrazaq underscores the need for increased awareness, sensitisation, and advocacy, particularly at the grassroots levels.
She explained that the Kwara government, through her advocacy efforts, had increased the budgetary allocation for the health sector, especially for the TB programme.
“Additionally, through the Ajike People Support Centre, we have been able to increase sensitisation on TB for the people of Kwara, so that affected persons can get free testing and free drug treatment,” she said.
The Kwara first lady congratulated the LG Chairmen’s wives appointed as TB Champions, enjoining them to serve as advocates for early detection, prevention of disease transmission and treatment in their communities.
The programme also includes the official handing over of the Global Fund-donated motorcycles, Hilux vehicles and portable digit X-rays.
Earlier in her welcome address, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina El-Imam, explained that the provision of vehicles and motorcycles is a game-changer in the government’s fight against tuberculosis.
She emphasised that the resources would enhance the government’s ability to reach underserved communities.
El-Imam also commended developmental partners for their various roles, while calling for synergy among stakeholders to combat tuberculosis.
