In the heart of Wushishi local government area in Niger state, amidst the rolling hills and rustic charm, lies a beacon of hope for the community – Kaka Adamu. For years, she has been the steadfast pillar of the Primary Healthcare Center (PHC) in Kodo, serving as the sole staff member until recently, when three volunteers joined her in the PHC.

Kaka’s unwavering dedication, resilience, and commitment to the well-being of her community have not only earned her the title of the best Health Worker in Niger state by BudgIT through its PHC Facility and Workers Award event held in Minna but have also touched the lives of countless individuals who have crossed her path.

Kaka Adamu’s journey to becoming a symbol of hope in her community is marked by selflessness and determination. Despite being transferred from BCC Bankongi to Kodo four years ago, she embraced her new Community Health Worker (CHEW) role with open arms.

The transition from urban to rural healthcare settings did not deter her; instead, it ignited a sense of purpose within her to serve those in need, no matter the challenges she faced.

As the only staff member at the PHC for several years, Kaka Adamu’s daily routine is nothing short of remarkable. With approximately 2,000 people relying on her for essential healthcare services, she tirelessly attends to each patient with compassion and professionalism.

Her dedication extends beyond the confines of regular work hours, as she often finds herself providing care to clients even during her personal time, embodying the true essence of service above self.

In an exclusive interview with ASHENEWS, Kaka Adamu shared insights into her motivations and aspirations.

“I did it because I was given an appointment by the government, and many of my mates do not have jobs,” she reflected, “God gave me a job for which I am being paid, so I feel I should not be cheating the government and the community. Since I am being paid for it, I intend to do the work and that is what I have been doing.”

Her words resonate with a profound sense of responsibility and integrity, highlighting her unwavering commitment to her duties. Despite the challenges inherent in rural healthcare delivery, including limited resources and staffing constraints, Kaka Adamu remains undeterred in her mission to make a difference in the lives of those she serves.

Receiving the prestigious award for the best Health Worker in Niger state was a moment of pride and gratitude for Kaka Adamu. “I thank God for the award,” she expressed humbly, “It is God who has given me the ability and the strength to achieve this recognition.”

Looking ahead, Kaka Adamu’s aspirations extend beyond personal accolades. She advocates for greater government attention to the PHC’s infrastructure, equipment, and staffing needs, recognizing the importance of investing in rural healthcare to ensure the well-being of communities like Kodo.

“My facility in Kodo needs serious government attention. This is in regards to the building, we need new structures, equipment and staff”, she stated.

She also advised her colleagues to be punctual and dedicated to their work, “My advice to my colleagues is that they should be punctual and dedicated in the work because they are being paid for it, they should have the fear of God and do the work they are paid for even if they are posted to rural areas”.

Kaka explained that if health workers infuse professionalism and commitment into their work, it would go a long way in improving service in the field of healthcare.

Kaka Adamu’s story is about resilience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to serving others. Her selfless actions have not only earned her recognition but have also inspired a community and beyond. As she continues to be a shining example of hope in Nigeria’s rural healthcare landscape, Kaka Adamu’s legacy serves as a reminder of the transformative power of one individual’s commitment to making a difference.
