The Life After Abuse Foundation (LAAF) has launched a toll-free helpline for men with challenges of abuse, trauma, and related issues.
The foundation also said that such victims could contact counselors or therapists for advice and assistance.
The Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Ms. Halima Layeni, made this known at the virtual launch of the initiative in commemoration of the 2023 International Men’s Day on Sunday in Lagos.
The theme of 2023 International Men’s Day is “Zero Male Suicide “.
Layeni said the motive for introducing the toll-free helpline was to prevent suicide tendencies among Nigerian men, thereby creating an avenue to speak out and seek help concerning their trauma.
According to her, the initiative aims to provide free, specialized medical, legal, and psychosocial support to men facing various challenges due to abuse, trauma, or related issues.
Layeni decried the lack of a platform through which men can express themselves when either traumatized or abused.
She noted that men too could be sexually or socially abused like their female counterparts, saying they also deserve the opportunity to speak out and seek help.
“The Men’s Support Helpline, operational from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, will offer a safe and confidential space for men in need of assistance.
“Amid societal stereotypes and stigmas, men are frequently discouraged from expressing vulnerabilities or seeking help.
“Recognizing the often-unspoken struggles faced by men, this helpline is a crucial step towards breaking the silence and encouraging male individuals to seek the support they deserve,” she said.
Layeni, also the founder of LAAF, expressed enthusiasm about the launch, stating, “It’s crucial to recognize that men too can be victims of abuse and trauma and face challenges in seeking help “.
According to her, in alignment with this year’s theme, the helpline endeavors to create a supportive environment where men can comfortably seek assistance without judgment.
She noted that the goal was to create a safe space where men felt empowered to seek assistance and begin their journey towards healing and recovery.
“The support provided through the helpline includes medical and legal as well as psychosocial counseling and emotional support.
“Trained professionals will be available to listen, offer guidance, and provide necessary assistance, ensuring the utmost confidentiality and respect for each caller’s privacy.
“With the launch of the Men’s Support Helpline, we aim to break the barriers that prevent men from accessing support services,” Layeni added.
LAAF is dedicated to supporting survivors of abuse by providing resources, advocacy, and specialized assistance to men in need.
It strives to create a world where survivors feel empowered, supported, and able to rebuild their lives after trauma.
