A multi-disciplinary team of experts has commenced an essential research project aimed at understanding and addressing the rising cases of kidney-related deaths in part of the Dade Emirate, Yobe.
The Director of the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre at Yobe State University, Dr Mahmud Maina made this known on Thursday in Damaturu.
He explained that Gov. Mai Mala Buni had tasked the centre to collaborate with international partners to tackle the issue.
Maina added that initial research had already identified Gashua as a hotspot for the problem.
“The next phase of the project will involve collecting environmental samples, such as soil, water, and commonly consumed food items like vegetables and fish, as well as samples from the local population.”
Maina said the aim was to pinpoint the potential causes of the kidney-related deaths.
The Chief Medical Director of Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, Dr Babagoni Waru outlined the scope of the research.
He noted that the team would investigate environmental toxins, conduct genetic studies, and analyse all possibilities to understand the causes thoroughly.
“Following sample collection and analysis, the results will undergo statistical analysis.
“The team will then formulate findings and recommendations, which will be shared with political leaders, communities, traditional rulers, and the wider scientific community through seminars, workshops, and publications in international journals,” he explained.
While commending Gov. Buni for his concern and support, Waru expressed gratitude for the progress made.
Adamu Yarima, a data collector participating in the training, described it as highly educational.
“The training has widened our horizon on how to conduct the activity systematically and scientifically,” he said.
The workshop brought together professionals from various fields, including physicians, renal nurses, lab scientists, geologists, and environmental scientists.
The goal of the workshop was to equip these professionals with the necessary skills to conduct the research.
