All academic activities have stopped at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Medical School because medical lecturers have started an indefinite strike. These lecturers are part of the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), LAUTECH chapter.
The strike started on Friday, August 1, 2025. It was officially announced in a letter sent to the university’s Vice Chancellor. The letter was signed by the Acting Chairman, Prof. M.A. Olamoyegun, and Acting Secretary, Dr. A.O. Alabi. The lecturers are asking for the full implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and the payment of unpaid salaries going back to January 2025.
NAMDA said the university has ignored their complaints for a long time, even after they sent several messages, gave a 14-day warning, and made many appeals. The final issue was when the university paid July 2025 salaries without including the CONMESS increase. This made the lecturers feel the university did not want to solve the problem peacefully.
The strike includes all academic duties like lectures, hospital teaching rounds, tutorials, exams, supervision, and committee meetings in the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences.
NAMDA explained that the strike is only against the university management, not the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital. The lecturers, who are also medical doctors, made it clear that their demands are only about their academic jobs and pay at the university, not their hospital work.
The lecturers said they have been patient and loyal to the university for over a year, hoping for a fair solution. But instead, they have been ignored and treated unfairly by the university management.
As a result, NAMDA said it had no choice but to completely stop all academic activities in the medical school.
The letter was also sent to important people and offices, including the Oyo State Commissioners for Education and Health, the Chairman of LAUTECH’s Governing Council, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, the Chief Medical Director of the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, and the National President of NAMDA.
