The Zonal commander of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Muhammad Abubakar, has called on the youths and the general public to join hands in the fight against drug abuse in society.
He made this call during a sensitization event organized by the African Youth Assembly for Peace in collaboration with the NDLEA Zone 7, Sokoto. The event was held at the Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic Auditorium, Sokoto, to commemorate the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse.
Abubakar noted that countries under the United Nations mark the day every year on June 26 to raise awareness and strengthen global efforts against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
He stressed the need for collective action, adding that members of the public can support the NDLEA by providing vital intelligence to aid their operations.
Highlighting recent achievements, he said the zone has seized over two tons of illicit substances since January. He added that 193 individuals involved in drug trafficking are currently under investigation or prosecution, while 359 persons addicted to drugs have been arrested and rehabilitated.
He reaffirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to arresting and prosecuting offenders involved in illegal drug activities.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Yakubu Takai of the African Youth Assembly for Peace said the initiative aims to support NDLEA’s mission in the fight against drug abuse in Nigeria. He thanked the organization’s Grand Patron, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, for his continued support, and appreciated all who contributed to the success of the event.
Ambassador Takai vowed that their efforts would continue until Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara are declared drug-free zones. He urged youths to stay vigilant and steer clear of harmful substances.
In a paper presentation, Aliyu Umama of the NDLEA explained that drug abuse occurs when substances are consumed without medical necessity or in excessive amounts. He cautioned against the misuse of substances like cannabis, cocaine, and heroin, which may have medical uses but are often abused.
In his remarks, Senator Wamakko, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Abubakar Alkali, called on youths to be good ambassadors in their communities and avoid intoxicating substances.
