Bauchi state government, has inaugurated an implementation committee on Violence Against Persons Prohibition, VAPP, law promising zero tolerance to all forms of violence in the state.
The governor, Bala Mohammed who inaugurated the committee alongside the Costed Model Action Plan Committee, said he is proud that the state was first to domesticate the VAPP Law in the North East.
“Bauchi is the first in the Northeast to domesticate the VAPP Law, but its implementation is being challenged with lack of funds and commitment,” he said.
The governor said stakeholders needed to create a peaceful and safe environment for the growth and development of the state, especially as it relates to the security and protection of lives and property.
Speaking on the Costed Model Action Plan for the implementation of the VAPP law, Bala said the state had identified intervention strategies that would have direct impact on the lives of the poor and vulnerable as it related to violence.
“The Costed Model Action plan is a tool that will help produce results through targeted activities, implementation strategy and monitoring and evaluation component,” Mohammed further said.
He appreciated the support of the United Nations women and government of the United Kingdom, for providing funds and technical support for the implementation of the program in the state.
Wife of the governor, Mrs Aisha Mohammed said sexual and gender-based violence committee under her office, is working to support the state government to eliminate gender-based violence in the state.
The UN Women Deputy Country Representative, Lansana Wonneh said the organization is in the state to assist in the area of improved welfare and living conditions of women and children.
The governor urge the committee to work with relevant stakeholders to reduce the incidences of violence in the society.
