Sokoto begins e-taxation, to pay salaries from IGR

Sokoto state has introduced e-taxation model for the collection of taxes and other revenues.

The Commissioner of Finance, Abdussamad Dasuki disclosed this at the induction of newly employed revenue officers of the Sokoto Internal Revenue Service, SOIR, on Wednesday.

According to him, the induction was organised to prepare the officers for optimum performance in the state’s paradigm shift in the generation of Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, Dasuki said.

ASHENEWS reports that Sokoto has recorded a marked improvement in internal revenue generation as well as rated best in IGR since 2015 when Aminu Tambuwal assumed office as governor.

Dasuki, who is also the San Turaki of Sokoto, said the e-tax portal, would revolutionize the process of tax payment by enabling tax payers to remit their obligations to the state “from the comfort of their bedrooms.”

Acknowledging the transparency and meticulous way the revenue officers were recruited, the commissioner expressed confidence that the officers would discharge their duties with competence and commitment.

He added that payment of their allowances would be determined by their capacity to meet their targets, which would be assessed from the end of the current quarter.

Dasuki told the inductees that they were integral to the achievement of the target that Sokoto state had set for itself of paying workers’ salaries through IGR from January 2023.

He further expressed confidence that the target would be realized, considering the clean up of the system, particularly through the enactment of the Fiscal Responsibility Law in the state.

Dasuki assured that the staff would be provided with sufficient working facilities and equipment, which would be available as soon as they assumed duty next Monday.

In his presentation at the event, Chief Oseni Elamah commended the remarkable achievement of the Sokoto State in IGR, which he ascribed to the commitment of the Ministry of Finance and SOIR.

Chief Elemah, who was Executive Secretary, Joint Tax Board Abuja and Chairman Edo State Internal Revenue Service, asserted that such performance could only be sustained and improved through collaboration and synergy.

He emphasized on the enlightenment of tax payers in order to induce the willingness in them to discharge their obligations.

The Executive Chairman of SOIR, Aminu Sarki in his welcome address, noted the far reaching positive developments in the Service that had placed it in position to discharge its functions effecently.

He urged the staff of SOIR to live up to the high standards expected of them, cautioning that there would be no room for laxity and indolence on their part.
