The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the full restoration of train services on the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor following Monday’s disruption that left 26 passengers injured.
Ashenews reports that the Managing Director of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa, disclosed this on Wednesday, assuring commuters of improved safety and operational standards.
Opeifa, in a post on his 𝕏 handle, confirmed that operations had resumed after swift intervention by NRC personnel.
“Following the incident on Monday, 16th March 2026, normal train operations have been fully restored through the swift intervention of the Nigerian Railway Corporation,” he said.
“Passengers can now confidently book tickets, as improved safety and operational measures have been implemented to ensure secure and comfortable journeys.”
He added that the corporation’s rapid response ensured minimal disruption to services while reinforcing its commitment to passenger safety.
The corporation also confirmed the successful resumption of the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service return trip from Rigasa in Kaduna State, signalling a return to normalcy for commuters along the busy corridor.
“We are also pleased to welcome passengers on the AKTS return trip from Rigasa, Kaduna State, yesterday, 17th March 2026, with the support of HRH (Alhaji) Ishaq Ibrahim Tanko, Hakimin Idu District Head, Abuja,” Opeifa stated.
“Train services are back to normal, safer and better.”
The incident occurred at about 9:16 a.m. on Monday near Asham Station along the Abuja-Kaduna rail line.
The affected train, identified as KA2, had departed Rigasa and made a scheduled stop at Jere before continuing its journey.
According to the NRC, after leaving Jere, where an additional rear locomotive had been attached, the locomotive became detached while the train was in motion.
It reportedly rolled forward and collided with the rear of the train, striking the power car and the last passenger coach.
The corporation clarified that, contrary to initial reports, the incident did not involve a collision between two separate trains.
Rather, it described the occurrence as an internal operational issue involving a detached locomotive hitting part of the same train.
Opeifa emphasised that enhanced safety and operational protocols have since been implemented to prevent a recurrence.
He reiterated the NRC’s commitment to ensuring reliable and secure rail services, urging passengers to resume travel with confidence as operations stabilise along the route.
