The Northern Governors Forum (NGF), in collaboration with the Council of Emirs and Chiefs, held a critical meeting on October 28, 2024, to address urgent challenges affecting the northern region, ranging from security concerns to economic hardships and infrastructure needs.
Led by Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, the Forum issued a communique highlighting strategic decisions aimed at fostering regional stability and development.
Solidarity and support amid crises
The Forum extended condolences to victims of recent flood disasters across northern states and the tanker explosion in Jigawa, reaffirming its commitment to work with the Federal Government to provide relief for those affected. Emphasizing a unified stance against terrorism and banditry, the governors expressed solidarity with all northern residents enduring these hardships.
Enhanced role of traditional institutions in security
Acknowledging the pivotal role of traditional rulers in achieving sustainable peace, the Forum called for strengthened collaboration between traditional institutions and security agencies. This alliance, they noted, is critical to curbing kidnappings, banditry, communal conflicts, and other criminal activities plaguing the region.
Investing in youth and tackling restiveness
Following recent protests, the Forum resolved to tackle youth restiveness by investing in education, skill development, and job creation, aiming to offer productive alternatives that deter young people from crime and social vices.
Addressing power blackouts and infrastructure vandalism
The Forum urged the Federal Government to swiftly address the ongoing electricity blackout caused by infrastructure vandalism. They emphasized the need for additional transmission lines and a diversified energy supply to enhance the region’s energy resilience and prevent future disruptions.
Agricultural development and economic growth
With a focus on the region’s vast agricultural potential, the Forum underscored the importance of supporting farmers through financing, modern techniques, and infrastructure such as irrigation systems. The governors also advocated for re-industrializing the North, particularly by reviving the textile industry and promoting agro-allied businesses to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.
Climate Adaptation and Flood Management
In light of recent climate-induced floods, the Forum resolved to partner with the Federal Government and stakeholders on irrigation projects to redirect floodwaters into productive agricultural use, thereby boosting food security and enhancing rural livelihoods.
Opposition to Tax Reform Bill and Call for Fairness
Expressing concerns over the proposed Tax Reform Bill, particularly the shift toward a VAT distribution model based on company headquarters rather than consumption, the Forum unanimously opposed the amendments, arguing they disproportionately disadvantage northern states. They called on National Assembly members to block any tax reforms that threaten the region’s welfare.
Reassurance amid economic hardship
Amid rising economic challenges, the Forum appealed for calm, assuring citizens that efforts are underway at state and federal levels to implement measures aimed at easing the financial strain on households.
The communique reinforced the Forum’s commitment to equitable national policies and balanced development across all regions, urging all levels of government to prioritize fairness and inclusivity in their implementation.
