Nigeria and Türkiye have forged a landmark partnership to uplift women, children, and vulnerable groups, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that promises enhanced social welfare, family cohesion, and inclusive development.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday during President Bola Tinubu’s official state visit to Türkiye. Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, and her Turkish counterpart, Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Ozdemir Göktaş, put pen to paper, capping a year-long diplomatic push.
This MoU targets economic empowerment for Nigerian women via entrepreneurship training, mentoring programmes, and solidarity initiatives to elevate their socio-economic standing. It also backs Nigeria’s inaugural National Action Plan on Families, framing the care economy as a driver of sustainable growth.
For children, the deal emphasised robust protection systems, including early interventions against neglect, abuse, and exploitation, to foster safer childhoods nationwide.
According to a statement by her media aide, Jonathan Eze, vulnerable populations—such as people with disabilities and the elderly—stand to gain from better social services, promoting active aging and full societal inclusion.
“This MoU perfectly aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim said at the signing ceremony. “We are committed to working faster and smarter to positively impact at least 50 million Nigerians by 2030 through these targeted social development programmes.”
