Nigeria tops Africa’s 10 biggest economies in self-employment, data show

New data comparing Africa’s largest economies and labour-market structure show a sharp contrast between output and work patterns, with Nigeria recording the highest self-employment rate among the continent’s 10 biggest economies.

The list of the largest economies

The nominal GDP rankings in the graphic align with the International Monetary Fund’s April 2026 World Economic Outlook, which places South Africa first on the continent, followed by Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco, Angola, Kenya, DR Congo, Ethiopia and Ghana. The IMF data put South Africa’s 2026 nominal GDP at 479.96 billion dollars, Egypt at 429.65 billion dollars and Nigeria at 377.37 billion dollars.

The labour figures in the graphic suggest a very different picture of how Africans work. Nigeria is shown with a self-employment rate of 86.2%, far above South Africa’s 17.3%, while Angola, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya and Ghana also post high shares of self-employed workers.

Economists say such figures typically reflect large informal sectors, weak formal job creation and the dominance of own-account and family work in many African labour markets. In that sense, a large economy does not automatically translate into a large pool of wage jobs.

However, the self-employment figures should be treated cautiously unless the exact source, survey year and definition are provided. The label “self-employed, total (% of total employment)” is an ILO-modeled indicator, and cross-country comparisons can be distorted when countries rely on different labour surveys or reporting years.
