Suleja and Gurara local government chairmen, Alhaji Abdullahi Maji and Yussuf Gwamna in Niger state, engaged in fierce fight in Kaduna, over claims for leadership of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON.
The two chairmen, who fought during the zonal meeting of the association in Kaduna, had an earlier disagreement over who is the rightful chairman of ALGON in the state.
Maji had presented himself as the chairman when the state was asked to mandate someone who would lead a delegation to Zaria to condole the Zazzau emirate over the death of Alhaji Shehu Idris.
However, Gwamna rose in disagreement, claiming that the chairman of Suleja was not the state ALGON Chairman and could not represent the state.
According to sources present in the meeting, who confided in ASHENEWSONLINE, after the delegation had left, the chairman of Suleja approached his colleague of Gurara to express his displeasure.
“That led to a shouting match and eventually to a fight between the two chairmen. The chairman of Gurara had an upper hand by beating his Suleja counterpart and injuring him in the process.
“Other council chairmen had to rescue the Maji from the burly grasp of Gwamna and had to rush him to the hospital with his face swollen and his nose bleeding profusely,” the sources said.
Meanwhile, Niger state governor, Abubakar Sani-Bello has expressed his displeasure over the ‘unruly’ behavior of the chairmen.
The governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Alhaji Nma Kolo described the act as ‘unbecoming and embarrassing.’
Kolo said that the government is looking into the matter to know what steps to take regarding the issue.
