The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Saturday urged collective efforts to combat rising drug abuse in Gombe State.
Mr. Adamu Karami, NDLEA Commander in the state, made the call during the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking celebration.
The public awareness event was organized in collaboration with MTN Foundation, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and other partners.
The aim was to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and promote healthy lifestyles among young people.
Karami expressed concern over the increasing drug abuse among youths, emphasizing the need for strong collaboration among government agencies, private organizations, parents, and communities.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to combating the menace through enforcement and sensitization, stating that success depends on collective efforts.
“Prevention is a shared responsibility. Drug abuse is not just NDLEA’s duty; parents, schools, religious leaders, community members, and organizations all have vital roles in prevention and awareness,” he said.
Mrs. Mary Ogunbodede, Manager of Impact Reporting at MTN Foundation, said the organization would continue supporting initiatives that empower youths and address social challenges.
She highlighted the importance of ongoing sensitization to discourage drug abuse and foster positive behavioral change among young people.
Miss Sarah Paul, a corps member, urged youths to avoid illicit substances and focus on activities that support personal growth and future prospects.
“Drug abuse destroys dreams and limits opportunities. Young people must make informed choices to protect their futures,” she emphasized.
The event featured an awareness walk from the Federal College of Education (FCE) through major streets in Gombe, ending at Gombe State University (GSU).
Participants carried placards with messages like “Don’t Let Drugs Cancel Your Future” and “Prevention is Collective,” engaging residents about the dangers of illicit drugs.
