Reactions have trailed Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa’s confession that he influenced his wife’s decisions, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, who was President of the Appeal Court between April 2014 and March 2020, to deliver judgments in favour of his colleagues.
Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa has confessed that he encroached on the freedom and independence of his wife, retired President of the Appeal Court, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, to extend her help to lawmakers whose cases were before the court.
Mr. Bulkachuwa, who represented Bauchi North Senatorial District in the 9th Senate, made the confession during Senate Valedictory Session last Saturday.
“I look at faces in this chamber whom have come to me and sought for my help when my wife was the President of the Court of Appeal,” Bulkachuwa had stated.
But the President of the 9th Senate, Ahmed Lawan, interjected and the following ensued:
Lawan: “Distinguished Senator Adamu Muhammed Bulkachuwa, I think I will advise that you just round up and just take your seat.
Bulkachuwa: “I didn’t name any name. We know ourselves.”
Lawan: “But this kind of insinuation will mean that there was favour. I don’t think it is a good idea.”
Bulkachuwa: “Well, Mr. Chairman, to round up, since that’s what you want me to do, I will do that. I must thank particularly, my wife whose freedom and independence I encroached upon while she was in office.
“She has been very tolerant and accepted my encroachment and extended her help to my colleagues.
Lawan: “Eh, distinguished, I don’t think it is a good idea going this direction, It’s not a good idea, please.
Bulkachuwa: “Well, Mr. President, I will say, ‘Thank you.”
