Fearing chaos on buses and trains, almost half of the people in Germany want to avoid, if possible, public transport where the new discounted 9 euros monthly ticket is valid during the summer months.
In a survey conducted by the opinion research institute YouGov, 49 per cent of respondents fully or somewhat agreed that they would avoid using local and regional public transport if possible for fear of crowds and chaos.
A total of 21 per cent of people fully disagreed with the statement, while 18 per cent somewhat disagreed.
The remaining 12 per cent were unsure or did not make any statements.
The nine euros monthly ticket was offered in June, July and August and was valid throughout Germany for journeys on buses, trams and regional trains in second-class.
During a recent long holiday weekend, shortly after the launch of the promotional ticket, some trains were so full that passengers were unable to board, especially for popular tourist destinations.
Along with being an inflation relief measure, the ticket was meant to promote climate-friendly transport.
YouGov polled 2,085 people in Germany aged 18 and over on June 7.
The results were weighted and were representative of the German population aged 18 and over.
